Light on the Hoe 2013

Oil on canvas

£850

A study of light and colour on water sea and land in the glare of sunlight on Plymouth Hoe.

To me, Art is about beauty and a part of being an artist is showing others not only the obviously beautiful things in life but also showing beauty in unexpected places or in the mundane where we may not normally notice it. There is an incredible richness of colour, movement and life which can easily just pass us by. I relocated to Plymouth from the Midlands in 1980 and painting the sea still totally fascinates me with its changing moods, colours and constant movement. I aim for strong, bright paintings that are more than just representational pictures. Seas, water, skies and trees provide a continuing challenge demanding different techniques, styles and media. I believe that sketching from life helps to capture the essence and vitality of any subject and try to paint from nature, my sketches and my experiences, using photography only occasionally as a reference and reminder.
