Kitchen Table 2012
Jan Brewerton studied for an Art Foundation Diploma at the University of Wolverhampton, a BA in Fine Art at Coventry University, and, after two years living and teaching in Italy, completed my post-graduate studies at Goldsmith’s College, London. She returned to an early interest in printmaking three years ago following relocation to Devon in August 2010, and works primarily in linocut. Individual works begin as close studies of everyday domestic objects – motifs arising in the forms of vessels, artefacts, implements, textiles, fruit forms, patterns and natural materials. The cut print blocks are then printed by hand on Somerset Satin paper in small limited editions. In her prints, Jan is interested in the pure contrast of black on white against a flat picture plane. As a painter, mainly in acrylic media, she explores the relationship between colour and pattern, surface texture, and the painterly development of layers or veils of pure pigment .Here her interest is primarily in the complex balance of figuration and abstraction achieved in the painted image. After many years teaching in art education, she now works full-time in her Devon studio. Her work can be found in private collections both in Europe and the UK.
